Boomkat Product Review:
Given that the Gnomonsong imprint is run by busy bees Devendra Banhart and Andy Cabic (of Vetiver) you might expect a certain degree of irregularity in the release roster while they're off touring, recording or just generally making like it's 1971 with their pals. Instead, the label has been reliably turning out gems from the likes of Feathers, Jana Hunter and now, folk survivor Michael Hurley, who started out his career with First Songs, his 1965 debut for Folkways Records. Hurley's music is steeped in bluegrass authenticity (heck, it even features contributions from someone called Gambling Charley, who also scores a song named after him) and has been namechecked but all the usual contemporary hipster folkies, but props to Banhart and Cabic for bringing his gnarled songcraft to the wider attention of the record buying public. Superb.
