An Audience Of Art Deco Eyes
Originally released in 2007 ‘An Audience of Art Deco Eyes’ was the debut album from Ian Hodgson’s Ghost Box approved Moon Wiring Club project and perfectly sets the scene for his hauntological experimentations. Back in 2007 the word hauntology was hardly on anyone’s lips – sure Ghost Box were pumping out 3” CDs and Broadcast were experimenting with the lost sounds of library music, but Hodgson was hardly part of a movement in the way that he is in 2010. It is a testament to his musical singularity then that ‘An Audience of Art Deco Eyes’ sounds just as stunning as Hodgson’s more recent efforts, and while it focuses a little more on atmosphere and less on the beats, it is no less arresting. Most of the sounds are sourced from television or film, with each clipped sample having the distinct sound of a VHS cassette. I can hear remnants of Blade Runner (the orchestral version, no less) in there somewhere, and of course plenty of dialogue snatched up from public service broadcasts submerged amongst odd percussion and bleeping Radiophonic synthesizer sounds. Listening to any of Hodgson’s records feels like you’re going on a journey and this is without a doubt the best place to start on that voyage. A huge recommendation.
