Boomkat Product Review
Teeel is the alias of on Jim Smith, and by the sounds of this lengthy EP he’s yet another new producer who can’t get enough of 80s electro pop. Smith doesn’t go for the cold/minimal wave jugular though, instead he looks towards Italo disco and the sleazy world of movie soundtracks to come up with a sound that could sit happily alongside Umberto and Gatekeeper just as easily as Lindstromm. Of course these hip comparisons would mean very little if the music didn’t stand up, and thankfully Smith’s production skill is exemplary – he has the sickly smarts of recent wunderkind Toro Y Moi or Flying Lotus in his well-honed sound, and while he might be using this to create music that was probably perfected almost twenty five years ago, it gives the songs an odd sheen that sets them apart from the rest of the crowd. Well worth diving in to.
