More late-night electro-fried 4th world jazz experimentation from Toronto's Joseph Shabason and Ben Gunning on this one, following 2019's 'Muldrew'.
They recorded their debut in a Northern Ontario cottage, so to switch things up a bit, Shabason and Gunning moved to Shabason's Toronto studio to work on 'Ample Habitat', where they had full access to an arsenal of synths, drum machines and instruments. They wrote the album with no clear idea of where it might head, but knew they wanted to absorb the energy of ECM's classic era, teasing Hassell-like soundscapes from their gear. And with Shabason on flute, sax, synths and piano and Gunning taking charge of the sampler, synths, guitar, drum machines and vocals, the result is expectedly hazy. It's jazz, just about, but filtered through alien electronics: 'Sea Ices' is disarmingly smooth, disrupted by looped, granulated throbs and wormy synths, while 'Measures of Fog' cuts from sublime ambience into itchy percussive stabs. 'Crystal Fake' is a clear high point, a glassy, FM-powered romp that ditches the jazzier elements and concentrates on an irregular, jerky rhythm that seems to mutate each time it cycles.
