Boomkat Product Review:
Another set of politicised, field recording-based sound art from the ever-compelling Ultra-Red. 'Amnistia (por Nueva York)' captures the day-long protests held on May Day, 2000 in NYC, campaigning for immigrant workers' rights. The recordings made at the scene are regurgitated as Matmos/Matthew Herbert-style micro-house, leaving the agenda of the occasion scrambled and confused by dancefloor aesthetics. The next track 'Amnistia (en MayDay2K)' preserves more of the crowd chants, while 'Sin Cargo (Amnistia)' is a little more esoteric in sound design although speech fragments are captured in the mix, before the EP closes on the concrète manipulations of the final track.
