Boomkat Product Review:
Collaborative studio album by Sun Kil Moon and Jesu. The album also features guests Will Oldham aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy, members of Low, Rachel Goswell of Slowdiveand Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse. and drummer Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth.
After years of flirting with each other’s projects, Red House Painters’ Mark Kozalek meets Jesu’s Justin Broadrick in this highly successful collaboration, accompanied by guest box from Will Oldham and Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell.
Basically, Broadrick does the music and Kozalek sings, rants in his celebrated, perceptively off-the-dome fashion, and it all sounds suitably abrasive, emotive as you might expect from this prickly pair of characters.
It’s nowt groundbreaking but, it certainly hits the spot as a well-wrought blend of British and North American shoegaze and singer-songwriter sensibilities, even with a few runs off road into BoC-like ambient hip hop juxtaposition (Last Night I Rocked The Room Like Elvis And Had Them Laughing Like Richard Pryor or Father’s Day) and dead sore, piano-draped lounge styles (Exodus) and hazy ambient-pop (Beautiful You).
Do check this out, we reckon a lot of you will be very pleasantly surprised.
