Boomkat Product Review:
It's been a while since I've reviewed anything on the always excellent Meanwhile imprint, the task having fallen to some other character in the office for the last few releases. I seem to have dropped on too, this new release from relatively unknown Dutch producer Mohlao somehow manages to inject freshness back into a label that has never failed to deliver consistently excellent twelves but which has stuck to a relatively rigid formula over the last couple of years. A-side track 'Ambrose' is beautifully morose and slow-paced, retaining elements of dub-tech with simmering chords and hissy production, but adopting a more introspective quality that ditches propulsion in favour of an altogether more emotive agenda. The real treat comes on the flipside though, with "individual' applying some rudimentary electroid patterns to an immense dub blueprint, ultimately sounding like Convextion's very first experiments under the ERP moniker and utilising neon melodies borrowed from late 90's electronica to startling effect. Brilliant stuff from Meanwhile once again - Highly Recommedned.
