All You Need Is Death (Original Soundtrack)
Lankum’s Ian Lynch proves the ideal foil to score Paul Duane’s Irish folk horror with his first soundtrack, hailing the power of the old tunes with a nerve-jangling, modern musical vernacular .
Leading down a darker lane after delivering 2023’s resoundingly acclaimed album with Lankum and his solo path as One Eye, One leg, Ian Lynch teams with bandmate John “Spud” Murphy to colour the imagery and dovetail the themes of ‘All You Need Is Death’ with a mix of trembling instrumental sound designs, reframed traditionals, and original composition. As in the film’s thrust, Lynch’s music reflects classic Irish fascinations with death and the supernatural, and where they come together in the songcraft and music unique to Éire and its identity.
In some ways the film and its soundtrack may be taken as a canny attempt to navigate past Ireland’s uncomfortable relationship with Catholicism in context of its modernity, dialling up prehistoric and pagan themes that still riddle the land and gave rise to its folkloric parables and rich oral traditions. The inventive instrumentalism of Lankum and One Eye, One Leg surfaces in the gnawing wind drones and extended strings tekkerz deployed on ‘Máirseáil Chrapchosach’, and a spine-freezing ‘Nestedodd Enabler’, with a particular denouement in the fairly harrowing wail of the original ’Old God Rising’, and its murderous BM version by Dublin’s Malthusian.
