Boomkat Product Review:
Although 'All Eternals Deck' might be John Darnelle's umpteenth album under the Mountain Goats moniker, it's actually only his third as a 'full band'. This band includes bassist Peter Hughes and drummer Jon Wurster, and is known for creating waves of controversy among Darnelle's legion of unruly fans. Those fans are still harboring a grudge after Darnelle upset 'em all by fleshing out his signature sound, but for those of us who simply enjoy his smart, well-informed songwriting and witty lyricism we can just soak it up in the knowledge that those ignoring it are really missing out. 'All Eternals Deck' might be the most developed of his trio of 'band' albums, the pointed songwriting is still at the core, but fleshed out by economical performances - these songs are spare and all the more beautiful for it. Just listen to the melancholy electric piano/drums interplay on the album's delicious closer 'Liza Forever Minelli' and you'll get exactly what I mean. This is deeply moving stuff, from the stripped acoustic dirge of 'The Autopsy Garland' to the funereal 'High Hawk Season', but engrossing from beginning to end. You know what to do.
