Boomkat Product Review:
**Edition of 500** Paradise Bangkok coin their new Eastern Connection sub-label with Hanna Mekonnen's sinuous Ethiopian groove, 'Ali New Biye' backed by a cracking Nick Manasseh version in dub. The new sub-label takes its lead from Chris Menist and Maft Sai's two mix CDs of the same title which explored the links between the East African Coast, the Arab Peninsula, South East Asia and all the musical cultures traversing the Indian ocean. Hanna's debut heralds a full length album on the heat-hazed horizon. Produced by Addis Abeba based label Sheba Sound, 'Ali New Biye' is a slick update of traditional styles, featuring Hanna in a female/male call-and-response riding tuff bassline with swaying handclaps and washint flute supplied by her band, who hail from the Mersa tribe in the Amhara region of northern Ethiopia. Nick Manasseh's dub is respectfully instrumental, letting the rhythm splash and loll with infectiously laidback character.
