Properly fwd-thinking all-African remixes of Mdou Moctar's 2021 album "Afrique Victime", featuring versions from Duma, Jay Mitta, Chrisman, DJ Diaki, Debmaster and MC Yallah, Rey Sapienz and others. All killer, no filler!
Not only is "Afrique Refait" that rarest of things - a remix album that doesn't suck - but it's a great showcase of contemporary African experimental talent. Mdou Moctar's acclaimed desert blues is already exceptional, but given the rework treatment from a host of talent from across the continent, "Afrique Victime" takes on new life. Tanzanian producer Jay Mitta's lightning-fast singeli remix is up first, transforming 'Chismiten' into a popping hyperspeed belter, with grinding Dar Es Salaam-primed rhythms behind Mdou Moctar's blissed Tuareg riffs. Rey Sapienz enlists his Congo Techno Ensemble cohort Fresh Dougis to assist on his remix of 'Taliat', allowing Congolese raps to criss-cross with Mdou Moctar's joyful vocals and a jerky electronic beat. Debmaster does similar on his version of 'Tala Tannam', pulling in regular collaborator MC Yallah to add her characteristic tongue-twisting flow to a sparse, almost ambient backdrop, harvested from Mdou Moctar's original.
Gabber metal duo Duma take the first truly left turn though, melting elements from various "Afrique Victime" tracks into a jerky slop of field recordings, booming Terrordome beats and blood-curdling death metal vocals. It's the weirdest mix on the album and possibly our favorite. Cairo's Aya Metwalli twists another highlight using vocals from 'Layla' and setting them against thick waves of synth and a slow, distorted, plastique rhythm - heavy as fuck and uncomfortably slow. The true MVP is DJ Diaki though, who decides to split the 'Chrismiten' stems into four separate remixes, each a rip-roaring example of his indomitable Malian party styles. V good.
