Reissued for the first time in its entirety, Dylan Beale’s soundtrack to the SNES Wolverine spin-off ‘Adamantium’ will take heads clean off with an hour of unmistakeable prototypes for the grime sound that emerged around 2002. Long before youngers in Bow started building beats with Music for Playstation and Fruity Loops, Beale laid the groundwork with the skeletal structures and locked in, economic energy of his commission for SNES, shotting orchestral stabs on fishbone waveforms in a way that also resounds with weird early ‘90s Coil studio offcuts, the brittlest Timba or Neptunes or certain late ‘90s dancehall rhythms, and early SoYo bleep techno too.
In 2016 the soundtrack’s ’Tri-Fusion’ was highlighted as a little known grime tabula rasa by Sir Pixalot on his dubplate bootleg fixed with J-Wing vocal, and now Sneaker Social Club do the right thing with this full reissue. It’s bound to bash the buttons of anyone who’s heard the link between the Streets of Rage soundtrack and early hardcore, and plugs directly into conversations we’ve had with Tom Boogizm and Finn about computerised, electroid roots of grime that was supposed to result a mix between the two, that never came to be. Canny DJs will find a lot to get down with here.
