Boomkat Product Review:
If you've ever wondered what a math-rock band would sound like if they unplugged everything then Hella are more than happy to oblige. Instead of their usual distorted theory-heavy artschool drum 'n guitar abusing, the duo of Zach Barr on drums and Spencer Seim on stringy instruments have tossed away their fancy effects pedals, turned off their amplifiers and gone all 'folk' with 'Acoustics' which does exactly what it says on the tin. What's more - it works, coming across like something you'd expect to hear on Tzadik or Rune Grammofon rather than on 5RC - challenging, knowingly obtuse experimental rock music. As Barr busies himself with the usual frenetic drumming, tripping in and out of time signatures, Seim fractures the acoustic guitar in the most beautiful way - think Derek Bailey with some extra adrenaline and you'll be half way there. There's not a great deal more I can compare this with, maybe it just sounds like Hella without any electricity - but whatever it sounds like I need more than six tracks, this stuff is hot!
