acid trax
Including the first new DJ Sprinkles material in years - Terre Thaemlitz and Will Long reunite on Comatonse for two and a half hours of deadliest, slow and bare-boned acid house, done the old skool way, including a trio of absolutely killer DJ Sprinkles remixes - 30 minutes of the stuff - a stone cold essential if yr into Theo, Larry, DJ Pierre, Virgo Four. Just so good.
Across a double album of purring 303 + 808 excursions, Will Long marks his return to Comatose after 2016’s much loved trio of deep house dives adorned with DJ Sprinkles remixes. He now reprises that communion with a focus on the roots of Chicago House thru a series of slow and sensual bangers harnessed in subtly swinging and pulsating grooves that mostly tilt over the 10 minute mark, allowing him all the time needed to get fully in the zone. In a concerted attempt to pull the sound back to its roots and away from its more aggressive, faster mutations, he prises the format’s hypnotic qualities in incremental evolutions, resulting in spatially compelling, queerly swinging and evolving trax that sing with a weightless elegance primed for durational sessions in red-lit basements.
DJ Sprinkles contributes her first edits and remixes since 2018, variously clipping the drums of ‘Acid Trax S’ to a deadlier strut, and getting farther under the hood on two ludicrously brilliant remixes. On ‘Acid Trax B (All Alkalis Are Bases but All Bases Are Not Alkalis)’ she adds extra piano chords and reshuffles the groove to a more lissom, debonaire swing, leaving lots of room in between the rhythm for loose dancing, whilst hewing tougher to the kicks in a deep, trotting ‘Acid Trax N (Acid Dog)’ remix, holding among the best and most sultry, hair-kissing Sprinkles gear we’ve ever been blessed with. It really is like prime Midtown 120 Blues sunk deep into vintage Theo Parrish gear, with added Larry style square bass for the good of the dance.
