Exploratory multi-instrumentalist Geoff Mullen presents his one and only solo release for 2011, a labyrinthine dérive through multi-tracked recordings of a live performance in Providence, Rhode Island, offered on Eli Keszler's Rel records. The original performance was captured using mics set back from the action in a large space, thereby capturing the feel of the room which he would later overlay - albeit crookedly synced - with itself and his own improvised responses to the piece. When coalesced with the new layers it becomes a loose form of meta communication with himself, "creating a tapestry of these three parts in order to highlight their inner-connectedness despite the fact that they were presented "out of time" in terms of action and speed. So rather than correcting his "mistakes" he's embellishing them and weaving them haphazardly back into the knotty swirl to hypnotic effect. The result is a shifting patina of freeform jazz and detailed electro-acoustics which gradually envelope the head in a fine tangle of tones, teasing your focus and depth perception with their moire interplay. An engrossing listen - highly recommended.
