*The return of the mighty Profan label, with Wolfgang Voigt delivering an absolute masterclass in how to f*ck with your preconceptions, building mutant Technoid variations that at one and the same time manage to remind you of SND, Untold, Gas, Armando, Errorsmith and Mika Vainio, abstracting mental time signatures and stabs with epic, layered strings - so so good!* One of electronic music's most intriguing characters, Wolfgang Voigt (Gas, Mike Ink, Burgerman etc) resurrects his seminal Profan label with four tracks of utterly engrossing avant-garde techno. Operating as Sog for this release, the 'Abweichung' (trans - 'Deviance') EP acts as the forerunner to a double CD and book of his own artwork entitled 'Werkschau' later this year, neatly in keeping with the label's long-held experimental ambitions. If you were aware of the stray Profan release 'Klaviermusik' in 2008, you may be expecting more psychotomimetic floor clearers (it's a useful record, this!), but instead Wolfgang has recaptured that sense of rigid teutonic funk that made his Studio 1 series so essential, but adding interstices of classical music with shockingly abrupt timing to make a powerful artistic statement. The most striking feature of modernity we find throughout the four tracks is the use of arid, Untold-style percussion, siphoning off any warmth for a resolutely cold effect that jars beautifully with the richness of the strings and occasional horn section, and chimes with that constant factor of Voigt's work, namely super-rigid grid arrangements that, like Kraftwerk or Neu, find an idiosyncratic funk resolution to their mechanical tensons where, in theory, there really shouldn't be. It's this loftily intelligent approach and its marvellous results that makes each and every Voigt record a must-check event, and this is no exception. Lovers of Atom TM, SND, Untold, Gas or Thomas Brinkmann must check without delay.
