Boomkat Product Review:
Dating back to 1982, this label sampler from the Compact Organisation has been reissued and repackaged, though retains its distinctive shocking pink design. The Compact label hosted a wealth of premium pop acts from the period, including Mari Wilson, The Beautiful Americans, The Popheads and Virna Lindt, whose album Shiver also sees a reissue this week. Lindt's 'Attention Stockholm' opens the collection, sounding like a cold war spy theme, opening with dramatic tolling bells and the Swede's kooky delivery. Further pop wackiness comes from Mari Wilson's 'Ecstasy', which is pure bubblegum, quite at odds with the Raymond Scott tactics of The Popheads' 'Headpop'. Elsewhere Shake/Shake lay down some ace post 'Trans Europe Express' synth pop in the shape of 'Shuttle Service', which actually still sounds like a viable piece of pop music after all these years. Apparently Shake/Shake went on to produce Transvision Vamp records and labelmate Cynthia Scott (whose cabaret-ish melodramtic songs feature throughout the compilation) apparently had a one-line part in Aliens. Given the sterling performances of all contributors here though, it's a wonder that none of them went on to become household names.
