After the recent, super twelve with Ras Donovan for the label, Stefan Schneider of To Rococo Rot returns with his solo project for a second offering, after the quietly lovely ‘Sleep Engine Sleep’ from a couple of years back. Astringent, pared down, crystalline melodies, the detail on the opening ‘A Map Of Africa’. Its not that this music is complicated, refreshingly free of some of the pretentiousness which sometimes plagues the artsy Staubgold camp, more that an immense amount of thought has gone into making this music open and enjoyable. ‘More People Than Two’ exemplifies this almost fireside glow which emanates from this glistening music. ‘I Don’t Know My Generation’ has it to a tee, development without confusion and unnecessary clutter. The twelve is here of necessity, the CD version adds the extra tune from the single and one bonus cut. It’s appropriate that the closing words should come from Ras Donovan, dub technique but in an 02 environment, his ‘Wake Up’ a touching closer to a finely spun record.
