Boomkat Product Review:
Already touted by Zane Lowe as the ‘next big thing’, Mazes have been compared to the Vaccines and the Strokes. They’re really not that bad though, trust me – and trust Fat Cat, the kind label who snapped them up and gathered up some of their best tunes for ‘A Thousand Heys’. Apparently the band had a bunch of tracks on various tapes before releasing this gem, and it sounds like it – there’s a lo-fi DIY quality that it’s impossible to fake, and lord knows there’s plenty of new bands faking it at the moment. You know the drill, crunchy leads, half-shouted nonchalant vocals, drums just nudging into the same rhythm as the rest of the track. This is punk rock, and really, there’s a lot more to it that might meet the ear – in fact I might even go so far as mentioning The Clash, blended with Pavement? Yikes.
