Boomkat Product Review:
Radiant, intensely cinematic themes for strings on this new offering for Erased Tapes from Michael Price, a film composer and music editor whose credits include the Lord Of The Rings trilogy and 007's Quantum Of Solace. He writes here for violins and cello "on an orchestral scale", and the four short and eminently digestible pieces featured - recorded at Pinewood, London - sound at once freed from the obligations of film music and deeply influenced by that tradition. Despite its title, there's a restless, galloping momentum to A Stillness, and that, coupled with the stirring harmonies throughout, puts us in mind of Philip Glass at his most classically-minded (as on his string quartets or recent soundtrack work) or Michael Nyman at his least twee. But Price's romantic creations aren't acts of minimalism; they're refined but unashamedly dewy-eyed maximalism, and this album is both a salutary listen in its own right and an effective calling card for those in Hollywood seeking someone talented but affordable to compose an epic, winningly old-fashioned orchestral score. Good luck to him, because on the strength of this set he deserves the call.
