Paean to Wilson was arguably Vini Reilly and The Durutti Columns most important piece of work since the demise of the original Factory Records in the early 1990’s.
Reissued in close proximity to Paul Morley’s biography of the pivotal Manchester impressario and co-founder of Factory Records, ‘A Paean To Wilson’ expresses Vini’s enduring admiration for the man who gave him his first record deal, and continued to sing his praises until he passed in 2007.
The feeling is clearly mutual as the record unfolds as one of Vini’s most tender works since his Factory era, transmuting love and respect into 18 lyrical instrumentals and a few songs featuring vox, including canny use of Tony’s sardonic query “is this an artform, or are you just a technician” that trails off into vaporous contrails on the gorgeous, 10 minute long ‘Chant’ - perhaps the finest Durutti in years.
"The Durutti Column was Tony Wilson's baby. We were the first act signed up to his Factory club night and the first band signed to Factory Records. Over the years we worked on many albums together and the one thing that Tony and I always argued about was that he thought that I should make music and write rather than sing.
After he died, I decided to make a body of work which did not have traditional song structures and which was concerned solely with the musical content. My only objective was to create some music that Tony would thoroughly approve of. I think I've done that and, if his spirit lives on - which I like to think think it does - I want him to know that this is for him."
