Boomkat Product Review:
Lawrence returns with a new album for Mule Musiq, produced on the road over the last couple of years and then edited back in his backyard studio in hamburg. It’s a sweetly ambient affair in the fine tradition of classic Artificial Intelligence productions, with the title track itself providing a knowing nod to the iconic Selected Ambient Works material. Elsewhere, 'Nowhere Is A Place’ harks black to classic B12 and early Black Dog productions, while ‘Simmer’ situates itself somewhere between the sort of thing the 12k label were releasing back in the mid noughties and Pete Namlook’s most heady Fax output. Like all his best work, there’s an effortless charm and approachability to the material here, there’s nothing too knowing or complex about any of these tracks and yet they steer clear of any overtly ‘chill out’ signifiers by virtue of Peter Kersten’s production savvy, making this a hugely enjoyable affair from end to end and another strong Ambient album in a year that seems to have seen a resurgence of sorts for this most maligned of genres.
