A Colourful Storm USB Bomb
We’re all about labels that open our eyes and ears - to music we didn’t know about, to artists we knew but never properly appreciated, in some cases to music we didn’t really get until someone placed it in a different context. A Colourful Storm hit that remit in spades this year, constantly shifting our expectations, exposing us to a crazy haul of incredible music in the process.
Released at the start of the year, Time is Away’s ‘Ballads’ perhaps provides the best illustration of what makes A Colourful Storm so special. For all intents and purposes a mixtape, its take on the form is so unusual that we’ve put it in our list of the top 10 albums of the year - the first time we’ve ever done that with a mixtape. Give it a listen and you’ll know why - it’s a masterclass in selection, world-building, and context-shaping.
At the other end of 2021, Laila Sakini’s Princess Diana of Wales was a slow-burn stunner, a deployment of personal song/sound-scaping that defied easy categorisation, where Grouper’s dreampop shifted uneasily alongside Coil’s weird momentum, something altogether new and intimate.
This epic 12 hour bomb not only contains some of the best music we discovered across multiple genres in 2021, it also includes a number of mixtapes (including that aforementioned Time is Away diamond, plus aces from Vladimir Ivkovic and Andy Mac), alongside a haul of label classics from previous years (Christoph De Babalon, Kallista Kult and many more) and several standout compilations (most notably the exquisite ’I Stumble And Then I Fall’ and the acclaimed ‘Still In My Arms’ comps) - and finally a brand new, killer mixtape from label head Moopie - 100% exclusive to this USB.
Trust when we say a whole world of new music awaits.
