Our Album Of The Year 2022.
Manc outlier Rat Heart floored us last year with a run of dancefloor-oriented releases that flicked the spectrum from Detroit Beatdown to aggy bangers - made in a classic, no-fucks-given style.‘ A Blues’ heads in a different direction, presenting love songs, prismatic instrumentals and downbeat elegies that throb like a sore wound.
Rat Heart is the pseudonym of Tom Boogizm, a local enigma who at some point sussed how to turn a lifelong obsession collecting tunes into his own thing, first as a DJ - one of the best around - then eventually rolling his own DIY productions from hardcore to drill, drone, blues, jazz, techno, jungle, basically - all of it - as long as it was good.
Recorded in his living room with just a Tascam, sampler, mic, guitar and some pedals, ‘A Blues’ is an album consumed by love, grief and self reflection, bursting with emotion, made off the cuff, from the heart - no artifice, just art.
It speaks to us on so many levels - capturing a sort of elemental, outsider energy we’ve always been drawn to, while also evoking the gnarled beauty of our surroundings in the spirit of so much foundational music from our neighbouring postcodes over the years - Autechre, Gerald, Durutti Column, New Order - all jumbled up, intertwined and eternal.
Why is it our album of the year? Cos it’s fucking beautiful.
