Boomkat Product Review:
In late 2010 De Stijl reissued Parasites Of The Western World's prototypical blend of post-punk and wave memes on their eponymous debut album from 1978. 'Black Balloon' is the first of two reissues of work by the group's main man, Patrick Burke. 'Black Balloon' orginally passed so far under the radar that we can't even confirm an initial release date, but the synthetic sound would appear to date it roughly around the early-mid '80s. Perhaps he was chasing the zeitgeist, but there's definitely a lot more hair about this one, from crashing syndrums to pomped riffs and dramatic vocals, but it's all hugely endearing and manages to steer just the right side of Thomas Dolby and Peter Gabriel territory with unique traces of synth-pop and an untouchably aspirational intent. Fans of James Ferraro and Twins should check this as soon as possible.
