Boomkat Product Review:
When John Zorn hit the half century back in 2003, a full month of musical shenanigans (included here in a natty little calendar) was organised in honour of the prolific and teeth-gnashingly talented fella; with Painkiller a crystal clear live recording of a veritable supergroup. Joining Zorn was the percussion auteur Bill Laswell and Hamid Drake, plus Mr Bungle, Faith No More, Tomahawk and Fantômas-man Mike Patton; resulting in a line-up that differed from the original Painkiller in number but not spirit. Somewhat grubbily referred to as Jazzcore, Painkiller combine aspects of metal, avant-jazz and ambient/dub, to create a sound which positively bristles with growling dissent. Divided up into three extended pieces, this 50th Anniversary release takes cues from all the protaganists solo fields, melting the indivdual influences down into an adrelinlin flecked sea-saw that in no way belies it's improvised roots.
