Boomkat Product Review:
An exceptional release even by Room40's standards, 5 Pieces is a tour de force of modern experimental improvisation, played out by the trio of Toshimaru Nakamura (on no-input mixing board), Hannes Strobl (bass) and Tony Buck (drums). This suite of electroacoustic recordings begins with a thirty-minute first track - the original inspiration behind the entire project, initially conceived as a composition for upright bass by Strobl. It's a wonderful thing, suggesting a more 'musical', jazz-oriented take on the Improvised Music From Japan school or the kind of thing you'd hear from the Erstwhile label. The naturalistic timbres are far removed from the established range of the instruments involved, and at certain points Buck's drumming is notable for sounding less like percussion and more like the pitter pat of rainfall or the scrunching of leaves. Nakamura's contribution is characterised by quiet diligence, sculpting exquisite, microscopic electronic tones in lowercase. Superb.
