Boomkat Product Review:
Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis' post-Wire ambient-noise scape, '3R4' reissued for the first time since 1980 when it was only 4AD's 2nd ever release. After setting a template for post-punk with a trio of now certified classic LPs, this half of Wire would begin to peel away from pop and standard songwriting to explore the studio-as-instrument with cinematic results. Melody and structure were booted out the back door to be replaced by the twin spirits of improvisation and innovation, grappling with sound as colour and space and texturhythm in a rich tradition stretching back thru the avant-garde and dub music, but hardly explored to this degree by punk or rock affiliates. Recorded at their notorious Blackwing Studio with Davyd Boyd (bass) and Russell Mills (percussion), plus pivotal engineer Eric Radcliffe at the desk (assisted by another legend, John Fryer), they sublimate sound to a spectrum of gaseous, spectral tone, at once glacially moving but infused with tense, internalised kinetics. RIYL Faust, David Cunningham, and Thomas Leer & Robert Rental's The Bridge. Highly Recommended!
