Boomkat Product Review:
Pan American is the solo moniker of Labradford guitarist Mark Nelson and saw the man behind one of post-rock's most influential bands take a turn into the world of experimental electronics. '360 Business / 360 Bypass' was Nelson's second solo record and a crucial part in his development which focused this time on the kind of dub-leaning techno minimalism we would have expected more obviously to have been emerging from Berlin rather than the USA. Nelson effortlessly showed however that he could merge his distinctive soundscapes with kick drum pulses and a minimal techno framework and in doing so put him way ahead of the game. This album was released back in 1999 and although it came after Gas, was a step forward for electronic music in the fact that it wasn't afraid to blend more traditional instrumentation with electronic beats and production. The experiments paid off and while '360 Business / 360 Bypass' is less successful maybe than his later albums it still stands up today as a hugely enjoyable body of work. Interestingly the album features vocal contributions from Low's Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk whose tones drift into the record's gaseous ether. Recommended.
