Boomkat Product Review:
Torus tickles Tresor’s softer underbelly with a suite of radiant ambient and vaporous trance scenarios
After collaborating with DJ Lostboi (aka Malibu) in 2020 and contributing to the overproof ’Tresor 30’ boxset in ’21, Torus makes his fully fledged solo debut for the Berlin powerhouse here with their first single in five years. They’ve evidently chilled out a lot since their early incursions on the wonky beats and post-dubstep era, refining a more sober yet enchanted style of extended melodic thought and radiant harmonics in each sweetly detailed part.
‘Sound of The Drums VIP’ ironically enough contains no percussion but makes a fine impression with its panoramic pads and breathy vox hinting at his album with DJ Lostboi. ‘Chroniko VIP’ zooms along that line to subtly weave in thizzing traces of AI-era electro patterns and distant dolphin cries on a submerged electronica fantasy, and ‘3000 Mirrors’ ascends beat-less trance arp peaks recalling section of TCF’s seminal YYAA tape, with ‘Omnia’ dematerialising into pure ambient trace bliss.
