Boomkat Product Review:
Cocteau Twins guitarist, producer and all-round architect of dream-pop, Robin Guthrie's also fast-becoming a hot ticket in the world of movie soundtracking, having already impressed with his score for Greg Araki's Mysterious Skin. In addition to the more abstract and amorphous material on show (for example, the phosphorous chords of 'Comprension', or the cloudy melancholy of 'Cuanto Tiempo?') the 3:19 OST also contains moments of outright, sublime pop clarity. 'Explaining The Game' is vintage Guthrie, encapsulating his distinctive, shimmering effects pedal sound based around chorus and tremolo, all rendered with a melodic, concise construction, the like of which tends not to crop up in soundtrack work. Similarly, 'A La Eternidad' swells up from quasi-ambience into a euphoric post-rock crescendo. It's all very much the sort of material that can make sense even when separated from the image it was designed to accompany. Gorgeous music.
