Boomkat Product Review:
Recently described by The Guardian (or is it now theguardian?) as being sullied by the mere suggestion that it should be considered a mere record label, 4AD is currently celebrating it's 25th birthday and has seen fit to release the obligatory retrospective of their past triumphs. Featuring music from the likes of the Cocteau Twins, Pixies, The Breeders, Mojave 3 and The Birthday Party, there's no real doubting 4AD's heritage; a fact that is hammered home by the stellar line-up and breadth of music on show. At the vanguard of much which made the 1980's great, 'Lorelei' by the Cocteau Twins still sounds astonishingly piquant and more than retains their stature as the band most able to make grown-men cry. Ahhhhh. Elsewhere the Pixies donate 'Where's My Mind?' and The Breeders 'Off You', whilst the likes of Sybarite bring up the rear-guard through precision tooled electronica and digital necromancy on 'Scene of the Crime'. Also featuring cuts from Throwing Muses, Belly, TV On the Radio and Red House Painters, this is a Brilliant starting point for all of you thinking of dipping in to the label 25th anniversary campaign, also available this week.
