Boomkat Product Review:
Tobias. turns his extensive tape archive into four deep, martial techno drills for Ostgut Ton
Referencing a mix of esoteric meditation guides and German politics of the era it’s titled for, ’1972’ sounds like a typical Tobias. records, all clinically crisp, supple and elegantly driving in a way you’d expect to hear at Berghain.
The title tune emerges from 1 minute of pensive tape recordings to hold its line of pumping kicks and teasing snare rolls into a sort of krautrock trance denouement. ‘Schism’ hits quicker and breathless from the off and keeps it up there with fluttering arps that leave the floor gasping for a regular kick, while ‘The Wisdom Of No Escape’ locates a sort of minimalist Goan trance sans the layered acid, and ‘Electric Storm’ yields a roiling cycle of EBM-techno dynamics.
