Boomkat Product Review:
Noted film and TV composer Ben Frost furnishes Netflix’s epic new sci-fi/horror series ‘1899’ with a suitably tense and foreboding symphonic score and his signature concrète-electronic palette
Now amassing a fair CV of work for moving image (Sólaris, Sleeping Beauty, Super Dark Times, Dark), Frost has come a long way since his early work on Bedroom Community. ‘1899’ continues his work with director/writers Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese after there series of ‘Dark’, ratcheting the atmosphere and intrigue of a story about “Multinational immigrants traveling from the old continent to the new encounter a nightmarish riddle aboard a second ship adrift on the open sea” with blends of magisterial and Ligeti-tense strings, keening synths, thunderous percussion, Chthulu-esque apparitions and choral arrangements recalling Eastern European folk.
