A change of pace and ambiguous emotions are felt in a reflective third of 4 x 12”s marking Diagonal’s strange and singular path in electronic music since 2011.
Arcing from the starlit skies spied in Jim O’Rourke’s part to the head-squashing audity of SOTE’s Future Sound of Iran styles, via Powell’s poetic inception with Kae Tempest, and the kosmiche post-rock trek of Blood Music, the session marks a certain maturity and expansion of Diagonal’s remit as the label hits its teens.
The mage-like O’Rourke follows a 2019 split with Not Waving with ‘ror bypass’, a beautifully meditative 10 mins of sloshing gamelan and iridescent air blessed with a sense of serenity, neatly contrasting the 12”s other bookend of knotted, microtonal modular and santoor convulsion in SOTE’s ‘Ataraxy’, resembling Autechre jamming with Dariush Dolat-Shahi.
A big surprise is Powell x Kae Tempest’s poetic exploration of uncanny valley tunings and compression in a ‘Kate’ reminding us of Terre Thaemlitz meets a typewriter, and also the Om x GY!BE-esque scope of ‘Heard in the Womb’ from early label recruit Simon Pomery’s Blood Music.
