Boomkat Product Review:
DJ Screw is possibly one of the most influential HipHop artists of the last decade. Before his untimely death in 2000 aged 29 (attributed to a "lethal combination of promethazine, codeine and other drugs" aka purple drank - cough syrup and soda) his individual style of drastically down-pitched mixtapes single-handedly invented the Chopped 'N Screwed style.
Also known as Screw music, his lo-fi innovation has been adopted recently by everyone from Oneohtrix Point Never to Drake, Fever Ray and countless others, notably inspiring the "Drag" sub-genre and reflecting an innately downbeat psychedelia in American R&B and HipHop.
This is just one of a reputed 1000 mixtapes that Screw made between 1990 and 2000, featuring his friends and local MCs waxing (melted) lyrical over signature cuts and deft FX applied to deathly slow R&B/HipHop instrumentals. The effect is deeply potent, everything slowed to an intoxicating viscous soup of bass and hypnotic loops, uncreasing the groove to release ethereal elements you'd never realise were there in the first place.
Still sounds like nothing else out there...
