10 Outta 10
100% Silk queen Amanda Brown revives her LA Vampires alias with super classy amvient-soul production by Brooklyn’s Danny Lane Scott, a.k.a. Cologne. Ace, this.
Back in 2010 Amanda Brown’s 100% Silk label and her LA Vampires project played a pivotal role in leftfield dance music’s shift toward lo-fi house, vapourware synths and ‘90s dance tropes. Both 100% Silk and House of Silk were the springboard for everyone from Maria Minerva to Octo Octa, Xander Harris and Fort Romeau, and that’s not to mention Amanda’s cooperation in the Not Not Fun label - which is a whole other (related) bag.
On ’10 Outta 10’ Amanda’s pop senses are burning brightly. From plush nods to Prince in ‘HOWUKISS’ and ‘LOVEDBYYOU’, she absolutely has his by a silky thread with the title track’s blushing pads and thizzing vocals, and the 2nd half follows in this mode, with drums smudged into a misty backdrops while the synths dance around her vocals, R&B styled with flickering 2-step in ‘SEARCH4LOVE’, and lingering languorous on BLONG2ME’, before she and Cologne wrap it up with a ribbon in the electro-soul flow of ‘GR8ISTHING’, featuring additional vox by Clare Gillies.
