Music From Memory celebrates a decade of activity with a globetrotting anthology of old and new material from their estimable roster of artists, including tracks from Gigi Masin, Terekke, RAMZi, Michal Turtle, Tombolo and Jonny Nash.
There's plenty of ground covered on '10', but we've learned to expect that from Music From Memory over the last 10 years. Releasing both archival material and contemporary tracks, the label has refused to allow itself to be categorized easily, shifting seamlessly from new age ambient gear to exotica, folk rock, minimal electronix, electro-pop and avant experiments. Here we've got submissions that span four decades: fittingly, Vito Ricci, who released the label's namesake 'Music from Memory' album back in 1985, contributes the oldest archival find, closing the album with the 25-minute 'Da Hamptons' from the same period. Bringing us closer to the present day is RAMZi's 'baci', a slippery alloy of choppy breaks and lysergic synths that's like Boards of Canada on Prozac.
Elsewhere, Gigi Masin's 'Panama Girl' is typically faded, submerging light-footed beatbox loops beneath smudgy layers of synth, and Lo Recordings' Jon Tye revisits his Ocean Moon project to slip into the liminal zone on the thoroughly transportive 'The Ecstatic Alarm'. Wherever you look, there's something sweet waiting for you: Bali-based artist Dea Barandana fuses eerie, kosmische synths and baroque piano on 'Undecenial', Japanese DJ/producer Kuniyuki Takahashi pokes at the sublime with 'Forest Dust' and Terekke compliments his 'Improvisational Loops' full-length with another slice of celestial, synth-based weightlessness.
