Boomkat Product Review:
03/07-09/07 is a singles collection from electronic duo High Places, who are currently touring with Deerhunter. Although Mary Pearson and Robert Barber come from very different musical backgrounds (Mary was studying the bassoon while Rbert was growing up with hardcore and punk) there's ample room in the High Places sound for whatever they might throw into the mix. Their 'without portfolio' style of electronic genre melting circumnavigates Afrobeat rhythms and joyous electropop while always keeping one foot in more experimental pastures. At times the electroacoustic backdrop to the songs evokes the work of Ikue Mori in its appropriation of ring modulated exotica and percussive weirdness. High Places are one of those post-Paw Tracks type bands that could be tailor made for Pitchfork, throwing together all the right influences to court indie acclaim, but there's nothing forced or contrived sounding about what they do: the duo carry off their idiosyncratic blend of styles in a manner that feels natural and organic, whether launching into a no-wave jumble of beats on 'Granola' or getting rhythmic for the kids on 'Jump In (For Gilkey Elementary School)'. Recommended.
