Prism-pushing grime mutant Proc Fiskal returns to Hyperdub with a mercurial volley following underground praise in 2018 for the distinctive sound of his debut LP, ‘Insula’
On the ‘Shleekit Doss’ EP the Edinburgh-based producer appears more limber and mutable than ever, tweaking and folding aspects of grime, footwork, jungle, and ghettotech in 6 fractal animations at 160bpm.
The deliquescent fluidity of ‘Satan’ gives a polychromatic rush to start, while ‘Smith’s Deli’ expresses his keen taste for bittersweet licks in a hypertight 2-step, and ‘Pico’ delivers a wicked shot of serpentine jungle breaks and curdled organ pads recalling a psychedelic Sully creation. Like fellow Scots, Rustie, Hud Mo, or Kode 9, he also twists folksy melodies into shiny 8-bit cadence in ‘4 Minutes’, while ‘Prop O Deed’ hits a piquant seam of sino-grime in a style shades away from Slackk or Nammy Wams.
The Hague’s Portuguese transplant, Lake Haze jacks the box in seven Drexciyan ways for Crème Organization (when in Rome, eh?)
There’s no mistaking this is Lake Haze’s most diverse and spicy clutch of nuggets, with strong highlights in the Drexciyan search vessel The Observer, in the ready-to-play Stingray weapon Prototype 1, and the deep blue depths of Into The Unknown, while the digital bonus cuts provide another in the electric charge of Unknown Aquatic Being.
