os mutantes - Mutantes
A follow-up to Os Mutantes' groundbreaking, genre-fusing debut, this 1969 album is a fittingly boundary defying exercise in tropicalia experimentation. Stylistically, Mutantes is all over the place, throwing a dangerously massive arsenal of instruments into the blender, at times resulting in outright confusion, at others a magnificently contrived amalgamation of seemingly incompatible musics, clearly influenced by the post-Sgt. Pepper experimentation in British pop. If anything Os Mutantes might be accused of taking things a little too far: pieces like the opening 'Dom Quixote' is a collage of baffling changes and is likely to wear you out before the record's even started. Perseverance is rewarded however, and Mutantes transpires to be something of a jewel in the Brazillian pop crown, even if it's far-out sonic digressions might best be appreciated in small doses.
