plastikman - Sheet One
Back in print! Originally released in 1993 on Plus 8 in the US, and Novamute in the UK, Sheet One took the acid world by storm. The reduced manner that the music was produced in was a fresh injection to techno, and a new direction for Ritchie. The original also came with a sheet of perforated paper with little Plastikman figures on each square, bearing a striking resemblance to a sheet of acid tablets, the rumour was some of them were actually dipped! To the music, one of the reasons this record changed the shape of techno is the seminal ‘Helicopter’ , a click fuelled snare rattling journey. Sounding like an alien percussion record with soaring quickfire snares floating up and down across the beat, the extremely reduced beats and filtersweeps add to the disorienting atmosphere and give birth to one of the maddest and most original techno tracks ever written. The album as a whole is varied across the techno spectrum, there are heartlifting string pads on ‘Drp’ that offer a touch of warmth in contrast to the cold machine funk of ‘Helicopter’, also classic acid in the form of ‘Glob’ which has superb 303 lines stretched over a sedate 4/4 rhythm. This album created quite a stir in it’s day and still sounds fresh and unique today, ace.
