happa - Two and Two Make Five EP
*Individually numbered edition of 500, initial copies on glow-in-the-dark yellow wax!* Our seventh Boomkat Edition is a shocking display of experimental versatility, awareness and talent by a prodigious new artist. Emerging only recently into a UK dance scene cleft between industrial techno resurgence, dubstep rave and bass/house ubiquity, Leeds-based producer Happa has adopted techno as his modus operandi, manifested in a pair of deadly effective remixes for Vondelpark and Four Tet, and a bass-sprung solo debut for London's Church club and label. In the space of a year he's gained an enviable profile, made all the more impressive for the fact that at age 15, he's also just completed his GCSEs. For his Boomkat Editions debut he renders a beguiling array of styles, ramping up with the lip-bitingly potent industrial slam of '13.05.13' (titled after the date he wrote it), before abruptly switching tack to sound like Reinhold Friedl dismantling a piano with Emptyset on 'Stirring'. Flip it over and his 'Escape' comes off like Alberich mangling a Joyrex side, whilst the rambunctiuous roil of 'Walice Berl' thumbs its nose at prissy, "perfect" mix-downs and fisted 4/4 to scintillating effect, all for the elegiac closer 'Put Your Suitcase Down' to capture the sort of lonely, heartbreaking swell of ambient emotion which eludes artists twice his age, or which they'd never have the vision to execute anyway. We think you'll agree that thespirit of UK electronic music has found an important, young new hope.
