christina carter / pocahaunted - Split LP
New on the splendid Not Not Fun imprint comes this all-girl love-in, featuring American underground lynchpin Christina Carter and feisty young wave makers Pocahaunted. Carter's side is about as straight-laced as you could ever imagine her work being, bringing to mind the sort of material found on Charalambides' A Vintage Burden album. With a voice dipped in subtle slapback echo and backed up by subtle, wraith-like guitar figures (maybe something she picked up from her collaboration with Loren Connors) Carter works her way through four simple, but enormously effective songs. On the flipside Pocahaunted opt for something a little more far out, with two lengthy drone/ambient explorations based on shoegaze-influenced guitar texture and distant, ghostly voices. As split LPs go this one works exceptionally well, with the two camps complementing each other beautifully - and this Christina Carter material is a must for any self-respecting fan of either her solo work or the more song-based Charalambides output. Limited to just 500 copies, pressed onto marbled peach vinyl. That's right. Peach.
