Rumour has it that World Electric is about to be thrust into the same hyped-up limelight that has engulfed Adult’s excellent Ersatz Audio imprint. On the strength of this latest 12” by Oliver Dodd, there’s little wonder why. Sitting comfortably between a spannered 80’s synth fixation and some deft crunchy electroid panache, this 4-tracker neatly avoids over-categorisation with an 80’s new romantic aesthetic, and instead offers something suitably tougher. The opening ‘Latex’ bounces with a slightly camp energy, all female vocal refrains and squashed Casio beats leading to a mighty fine synthpop escapade. ‘Corporate Whore’, however, is where things get seriously freaked. A fantastically destroyed and detuned casio bassline and crunchy midpace electroid beats rotate with a delicious layering of ‘Corporate Whore’ throughout – Adult fans out there would do well to listen to this...and LOUD. ‘Codec’ kick-starts the flip with a more aggressive surge of energy, metallic drums and Mantronix-esque digibass engulfed by a swarm of high-pitched synth sounds and rolling crescendo’s. Ace. ‘Tokio Electric’ ends us off on a spannered note, destroyed electro of the finest kind, all filtered and progressed with a wasted gurn. Wickedness throughout.
