black deer (willie burns) - Trail Of Tears
Black Deer is Willie Burns' psychedelic tribute to "the real americans". His "sympathetic storytelling" takes shape as four pieces far removed from his Willie Burns outings on Creme, TTT or L.I.E.'s, but still anchored in a sort of yearning for transcendent moods and grooves. The expansive A-side is a real treat, melding motorik krautrock bass pulses with swirling guitar licks and tense raindance percussions precipitating a fat bass throb in the finale. Imagine Polmo Polpo and Morphosis getting dark and spiritual and you've got the right idea. B-side, his 'Chief Big Thumb' chugs like Wolfgang Voigt's Grungerman producing for a Werner Herzog doc, and 'Native' and the new age/post-punk inflections of 'Trail Of Tears' infers a more ritualistic vibe. Or, as Neworldaquarium puts it, "Willie Burns goes Astral apache with a vengeance..." Tipped!
