autre ne veut - Anxiety
Finally!!! Autre Ne Veut births a sensational 2nd album, twisting the emotionally fraught template of his self-titled debut - one of THE records of 2010 - on ten tracks of 'Anxiety'. In the most classic pop sense, Autre Ne Veut expresses those feelings that people struggle to deal with, isolating and rendering an ultra-fine audio frequency spectrum of bio-chemical triggers that leave us blessed and baffled in equal measure every time we submit to these emotional experiments. As a combination of that heart-clawing voice, intense vortices of arpeggiated trance escalation, body-slamming industrial R&B and melodic hooks that crawl out of your skin long after the moment, 'Anxiety' accelerates the affect and intent of its predecessor to stunning degrees. That may be due in part to the expanded production assembly, counting Ford & Lopatin (keys and V-drums) alongside Software's in-house engineer, Al Carlson (baritone sax and keys) and the Zambri sisters (vocals) and their attentive contributions, or it may be a growing confidence in his own sound, but whatever it is, he's just turned in a freakishly good album. Of course, it's not flawless - in such an ambitiously complex and detailed pop record there are moments which fall short of major studio capabilities, and there's maybe too many guitars for my liking - but the vulnerability and ecstatic grace exposed in 'Ego Free Sex Free', the craftiness of 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody' and 'World War''s refractive switches, or the wilful extremities of 'Promises' add up to one of the year's most intriguing and compelling new records.
