four tet - 0181
*Strictly limited copies* Recorded around the time of his first couple of solo records 'Dialogue' and 'Pause', '0181' slots snugly into that post-rock meets electronica sound, with crunchy breaks underpinning disembodied drones and haunted glockenspiel echoes. This was back when Fridge (the innovative post rock troupe Hebden cut his teeth playing with) was more than a distant memory, and the skeletal forms they perfected are still present on the wallpaper. It's no bad thing either, and with the negative connotations of the genre all but gone re-evaluation of this material seems more than due, and there's a surprising freshness and sparseness to the sounds. Hebden's passion for 90s rap production and 2-step can be just about made out through the prickly guitars and wavey melodies, and while it's a long way from the devious complexity of his recent work, it serves as more than just a stop-gap.
