starkey - Orbits
**Double disc includes download code redeemable from the label** American dubstep ambassador trades in a souped-up EDM sound on his 3rd full length. It's a natural progression from his Planet Mu and Ninja Tune outings, leaning harder on the trap elements and boosted by near-orchestral sawtooth synth arrangements cut in line with the likes of Skrillex and that whole US rave sound. Galvanised by IMAX-style sound design, 'Orbits' oscillates between synthesized cinematic ebullience and and hard-edged halfstep and hip hop, ascending the sparkly arpeggios of 'Renegade Starship' to the full frontal dynamics of 'Command' and the two-part sci-fi operatics of 'G V Star', taking in the lip-smacking cristal roll of 'Thugs' and sheer hi-end synths on the chest-bursting 'Lzr'. At its apex 'Synchronize' offers a moment of star-gazing respite, before muscular 'floor maulers like 'Dystopia' and the razored ultra-trance riffs of 'The Shuttle' keep the narrative twisting until an electro-charged finale 'Distant Star'. Basically it's brash, bold and in-yer-face, but with a nuanced arrangement making for the headphone crew.
