The second installment of No Pain In Pop’s ‘The Bedroom Club’ series finds another handful of young producers who revel in solitude and left-of-centre ideas. Where the first included artists such as D’eon and Pariah, this time there’s a spotlight on seven artists, and little more is known about them than the woozy sounds themselves. Kicking off with mysterious Finnish artist Ukkonen’s ‘Five to Three’ we start off in fine form with clouds of Lopatin-esque FM synthesizer set to pounding kicks and a pulsing acidic backdrop, setting the scene for the record with a whimsical outsider quality that’s hard to put your finger on. Elsewhere John Ola’s ‘BD’ is a warming, fuzzy downtempo chunk of electronics and the peculiarly monikered Buffalo Tide brings to mind Sir Richard D. James with the spannered ‘Madchen Amick’, which is rarely a bad thing. It’s when beats are stripped away altogether that the ‘The Bedroom Club II’ comes into its own though, firstly with the eroded almost Leyland Kirby-isms of Beams’ ‘Reveal Secrets (The Processes)’ and lastly with ‘Hunger’, a brand new track from Dyymond of Durham, who you’re more likely to know as Matthew Barnes (aka Forest Swords) and fine artist Otto Baerst. Oh, and there's a track from Karen Gwyer - whose debut album for the label really just might be the best thing they've released to date. Recommended.
